That depends on a few factors. What are you targeting? How deep of water? A net for bull minnows in a creek can be smaller than one used for Lys or big mullet. Calusa.com has a great tutorial video.

I would recommend a 7 or 8 foot castnet with 3/8 inch mesh for bait fish. The smaller ones don't open as well or sink as fast.

I throw nets for mudminnows/finger mullet for bait on at least 70% of my outings. My first choice for getting them in shallow creeks is 7ft, with 1/2inch mesh and 3/4lb weight per radius foot (1lb/ft is overkill if you are throwing in 2ft or less depths, which is where most creek mudminnows will be). Second choice would be 6ft, but any smaller yields too little net area (remember from school? Area of a circle = Pi x radius squared!). 3/8inch mesh also works okay, but 1/2inch takes up less space and gets exactly the best size baits (3.5-4.5 inches).

You can pay over $100 for a quality net, but the cheapos work fine for mudminnows, and won't break your heart as much when they snag on oster bars & rocks!

For a beginner try a six foot net. Its fairly easy to control. But i highly recommend a topwater plug like a one knocker, a gold ADL spoon or a DOA Jerkbait with a 5/0 hook as a better alternative. For all around results a popping cork with 12-18" leader and a gulp 3-4" inch shrimp on an 1/8 oz jig head works too but not as much fun as a top water blow up.
