The most recent update on the FWC statewide closures link says that Swartz Tram is open, but both Coker Road and Cow Creek Grade are closed south of Swartz to all access (even by foot). It indicates that the interior of the impoundment is open to foot/boat access from Swartz Tram, which confuses me. I'm pretty much up for bushwacking anywhere, but don't see from satellite maps what I can wade to from Swartz Tram.

That said, weather permitting, I'll give it a shot this Saturday and/or Sunday. Have previously had a bit of luck in the marshy tidal ponds west of Coker, but it took a lot of slogging...and holy cripes, the wild hogs grow big and scary around Econfina. Bringing bear spray this time.

The last word I got from my FWC contact who has direct knowledge of the project was that the work had not started as of Jan 16th. But he said it should start soon and a hopeful completion by sometime in April barring any delays. Until that happens they will probably keep the signs up restricting vehicular traffic.

Gary, you need a go pro. I would love to see what one of your treks entails.

Last Sunday, I was in the middle of Deep Creek, warily recalling that big gators hug the bottom there. All of a sudden...

...a river otter popped up right in front of me. I 'bout pooped my pants.

Otters had scared me more than once. They're so quiet and they they just pop up, and even though they're not dangerous there's just something scary alout something that looks like a baby in the water popping up and smiling at you lol!

Latest response this morning from my FWC contact regarding Hickory Mound.

"Most of the rock has been delivered and spread. Another couple of weeks or so on the box culverts and crabbing platforms. We hope to have it open the first week of April. Of course that is barring any unforeseen circumstances."

Sounds like a month away!

The Hickory Mound restoration work is going through final inspections this week. If all goes well FWC anticipates opening the access to vehicular traffic next week. So the first available weekend for access should be April 7-8. :A1
