Outboard overboard at AGP :(

On vacation last week, a storm rolled up on us and sank my 14' jon boat which was tied up to the dock on the harbor side of AGP. :( It had been fine there for numerous days, but one of those thunderheads came upon us, the wind shifted outta the north, and all the sudden there was quite a chop and my already low-riding stern became easily accesible for AH waves to fill 'er up.

Anyone have any experience with sunken motors (particularly motors sunken in salt)? I've heard it's not necessarily a death sentence, but that you must work quickly, and it has now just been sitting for 10ish days with only a thorough freshwater hose washing. Planning to drain some fluids tonight and tinker with it, but my experience working on outboards is next to nothin.

I'm not very optimistic....any tips?

As long as none got sucked in the engine it will probably be ok.

My Grandson and some of his buddies capsized in a boat while duck hunting last season. That night they washed the motor down, put in fresh oil and gas and it ran fine. For awhile. It finally died. I've heard it makes a difference if the motor is running or not when it goes in.

Call Pete and Pete's Outboard Service (850)576-3464. He is one of the best outboard mechanics in town (IMHO).

Update: Sprayed all the joints and movable parts with WD-40 to loosen things back up, corrosion had started. Went to drain the oil and about 5 seconds of saltwater came out before anything that resembled oil. Drained the lower unit and the fluid looked great, i don't think any saltwater got into the lower unit. Pulled carburetor and it was extremely gunked up...going to try to just clean the mess out of and avoid a few hundred dollars for a new one.

Went to the store and got 2 new oil filters, new cheap oil to pour through and hopefully it will grab all the leftover water, new spark plugs, new fuel filter, carb cleaner, and Mercury Quicksilver engine oil and lower engine fluid. Going to go tinker more later on. Hoping that she will be running soon with only about $50 of replacement parts

Once you get it running let it run for a few hrs to let any residual moisture to evaporate out so have a trash can or something else to put it in. Keep checking the sparkplug when trying to start to make sure it stays dry, a wet (moisture) plug will short and not spark like it supposed too.
