This is what happens when you don't listen to BK.

That's the eye of the front treble still attached to the split ring. The back treble was also crushed. I never would have dreamed a fish could break a hook like that. Swivels would have definitely helped.

Damn Tim!! Did you get a look at the fish that did that? Do tell.
Thanks for the props but I shouldn't get the credit for the swivel thing. I'm sure I saw it somewhere else.

Earlier this year I caught one 51". Ever since then I've had my eye on the kayakwars record of 58. I believe this one had a shot. I got it up to the yak and then all heck broke loose. He was about as big around as a volleyball. Serious weight, power and tenth. Them KVD hooks never had a chance. I wonder if he cut the hook, or twisted it apart.

It takes about 15 minutes to land a gar that size. Just sit back and enjoy the ride and wave at the folks fishing on the bank as you go by. I got impatient and it cost me.

Brilliant stream of random musings going on here.

Brad - have you ever tried the rear swivel on walk the dog type bait? I wondered if the added length and weight would still get the same action. I have previously noted that some poppers really want a little more weight than the factory hooks. If a lure has an anemic pop, a little more junk in the trunk can make all of the difference.

As for rotating hooks, has anyone ever tried these?

They have always looked gimmicky and too flimsy to me but what do I know?

Greg. They sell those rotating hooks at Kevin's as well.
As for trying a swivel on walk the doggers, yes., I use them on spook jrs. Seems to give the ass end more kick. Always a good thing.

What kind of paint did you use?
Tim, I found that most paints, unless you apply them with an air-brush, will go on too heavy. Also, most won't hold up unless you clear coat over them. Adding even more weight. Lately I've been using crushed up dewberry juice, mixed with the urine of the rare and endangered 2 headed, hibiscus sand fly. But not the females. Only the males urine works. I've also experimented some with permanent markers.
