I'm sure it's a distant second priority for you but when I'm visiting a new area, I always do a lookup on what the beer scene is like around town. Never been to Asheville myself, and I've heard a lot about the beer culture there. So, I can't speak for what I might be leaving off the list. But my favorite app at the moment is The Beer Mapping Project. You can view a "Google Maps" adapted version for the Asheville, NC area here:http://beermapping.com/a/1220
You can select and deselect types of items to show on the map such as Brewpubs, Breweries, Homebrew Stores, and Beer Bars. I always find it a great resource when I'm visiting unfamiliar territory. This has turned into one of my favorite hobbies: visiting a brewery/brewpub and talking to the brewmaster if he/she is available. Sometimes it's more formal...sometimes it's not. But it's a great way to get to know the locals and learn a few tips and tricks for the brewing process. I also find a lot of inspiration for future homebrews from these guys who brew for a living.
Just something to consider when you are out and about. Also, you could bring along a couple of your scouts...I'm sure they need to earn their "Designated Driver Merit Badge."
