Keeping track of your materials

Well if you are like I am, you may have lots of materials that you sometimes forget you have. I ran across an article with spreadsheet that may help keep you up to date on what you have and what you need. It may come in handy when you see those great buys when out of town at a fly-shop! my spread sheet looks like this..

need to tie more flies.
gather my super cool fishpond fly material organizer bag
set up vise
sit down to tie
notice that i'm out of a needed material
call shorewalker and bum some material (he has 12 of everything )
finish fly.

As BK alluded to if I find a great buy at an out of town fly shop. I go ahead and buy it. Compared to other vices (those I have and those I have avoided) buying a pack of seagreen mylar for $0.72 is really cheap. If I spend $70 bucks at a fly shop I just skip that jet ski for an hour, go to the fish taco bar instead of the $$$ steak house, or get a 6 / 12 / 24 pack of beer and drink them by the pool / coastline instead of going out to a bar one night. Just make sure you have a checked bag if you want to pick up 50 Gama 3/0 hooks. TSA is not you friend.

Besides I always know what BK is catching the fish on because he always needs some white zonker strips, black marabou, or peacock herl. Plus his poppers that he trades me are a lot better than my pathetic attempts.

I keep all of them in a box, and the box has boxes and bags in it. The main inside box has my pedestal vise, scissors, and other things I set up before a tying session. The bags contain the materials, like bucktail and hooks. There's a hook bag, a feather bag, a deer hair bag, etc.

Wally- Since I inherited 3 large "crates" of materials for the master tyer (Tom Broderidge), you lose track of what all is in there! Saw the article and thought it might help others.

FYI- Flymasters has a new video posted on "Hook Point Up" fly tying. May make for some interesting weedless hook designs.
