Kayak Rocket Launcher

Postby Afterburner on Sat Jan 23, 2010 6:16 pm

Rigged up this nifty rocket launcher for my Hobie Mirage Adventure. Just used PVC, stainless U-Bolts, some aluminum bar, and a 6 rodholder setup from West Marine on clearance for $ 10.00. I've got less than $ 25.00 invested in it. I got the rods nice and high off the water, but not too high as to significantly raise the center of gravity, and within easy reach. I filled the PVC with expanding marine foam so the rig will float. The whole thing plugs into my two existing rodholders:

Looks great. Are the rods hard to reach while sitting?

Maybe you can also use it as a rest while standing if you buy some outriggers. Nice setup.

Yeah... the rods are easy to reach.... obviously I have to turn more for the ones in the middle... but it's worth it to be able to take 6 rods. I have a fish bag cooler that goes under the rods, on top of the bungies. Then additional storage under the bungies. I like the outrigger idea so I can stand. My next project may be to strap on a small afterburner to the back. I've got it figured I can use a small propane tank, and a brush torch strapped on the back.....it should get me up on plane for about half way across OB on my way back so I don't miss Margarita time. LOL

I went across OB Saturday with the rocket launcher on the back. Tested the craft for stability... only had 3 rods on there. This was actually the first time I have used the thing.... it's been so cold and rough out, and poor fishing. The stability was excellent, even taking waves broadside, and it remained in place without working its way out. The rods were easy to access. It was a home run..... I just went out and bought 3 more rods that will fit into it.... I'll be ready for the tourney wielding 6 rods out there.

I need to get a small trailer for other reasons.... I have my own concrete boat ramp, with concrete driveway attached to the ramp. I've never taken the kayak elsewhere to launch. That limits me. Ideal would be the Trailex lightweight trailer..... over $ 1 K. I don't have a pickup, and don't feel like using roof rack. With the plug-in dolly, on a really low tide, I can't even get the kayak launched by myself (have to lift the yak off the dolly). A trailer with bunks would get me around to other fishing spots, and could launch on lower tide. The current setup is very stable..... but it's only been on concrete.
