Atticus' thread of newb

So I took the plunge and got a used Native Ultimate Tandem 14.5 off of a local Craigslist ad. I've been wanting a yak for years (I have a flats boat) and I finally made it happen. Took it out bassin today and caught a few fish. The yak was purchased form a duck hunter and it doesn't have any accessories on it. I will post some pictures then finish up by asking the litany of noob questions that I suspect get addressed here all the time.

See that triangular area behind the rear seat? Adjacent to the cross member? Would it be crazy to put a flush mounted rod holder in there (one on each side)?

Anyone have a favorite "fishing" PFD they wear on the water? One with like pockets and storage for fishing stuff since it'll be worn over a fishing shirt?

Hey Atticus! Wish I could see the pics. Native Ultimates are one of my favorite boats. I don't own one but I know they can be accessorized in any number of ways to suit your needs. We have outfitted many of them. I can tell you that my PFD of choice is a Stohlquist fisherman. It has two big front pockets that will fold out flat to help tie or retie and will hold my phone, camera, vape, etc. Great flotation and easy to fish in. Good to hear you are getting on the fish!

Welcome, Atticus! Congratulations on your kayak.
Have lots of fun rigging and taking her on adventures.
The possibilities are endless.

Hope this old pic helps. I used the Scotty Brackets. Two just behind the seat.

Pictures should be working now.

I should have four "foot pegs" inside the Native but I got it used and it only has 3. Where should I buy another "foot peg" for the interior of the kayak?

Foot pegs can be expensive. It's usually better to just cut one leg off. If that doesn't sound good, bring it by Wilderness Way. We probably have one. They are cheap.

Cotton- where did you get those? Are they just standard ones from Walmart that you put in?

They were bought with prize money from kayakbassfishing.com

Hey Luke, I have the same yak( not tandem). Kevins didn't have the angler package at the time, so I added the 2 Scotty flush mount rod holders on the back( not like the ones cotton showed) and the anchor trolley. The rod holders are a little far back to turn and reach really well, but can be done. This will be less of a problem when set up to be a tandem, but you'll have to reach if solo. If I were you I'd consider mounting one in front. I would absolutely install an anchor trolley . Those help a lot. Looks like you got a new bed extender, I would have sold your back to you. Good luck, pm me if you have any more questions , David

Hahahaha yeah. I was kicking myself for selling the bed extender to you. I got one from Amazon and it seems good.

For rod holders in the back, consider mounting 2 or 3 vertical rod holders on a milk crate and keep in behind the seat. The reels will get much less salt on them and they may be easier to access. Good luck

I do both. Never troll with those in the milk crate. Something big will take everything.

I put in two rod holders (the one on the right should be another 1/4in forward) and a foot peg on Saturday. Still haven't pulled the trigger on a PFD.
