Rods

Post by Flint River Pirate »

How many rods do you guys carry on your yak? I have been taking 4, but I feel it might be too many. I am trying to get out of the boat mentality. I was just curious how many you vets carry on an average trip. I just hate to stop and re-tie so I have always carried way too many.

I carry three or four but no one has ever accused me of carrying too little tackle. Big topwater, small topwater / subsurface, gold spoon / jig, and sometimes I drag a jig or GULP on a tourist rig.

It depends too. I think BigIrish finds a nice spot on a bar and puts out like 4 live bait rods simultaneously. I have seen him (or someone else I'm no the best with names) double up on his boat (that's the two trout / one boat / one angler / zero netperson double ) at St Marks tourney.

If you are planning on fly fishing from the kayak even the paddle will get in the way  .

2 in salt. 1 baitcaster for poppers. 1 spinning for everything else. if weather permits, i'll substitute a fly rod for one of the others.

2 in fresh. 1 baitcaster, 1 fly rod.

i find it easier to tie knots and switch lures than bring extra rods.

I pretty much do the same thing as shorewalker. During the spring and fall dragging the tourist rig behind the yak you can sometimes limit out on trout. I usually reserve my worst pole for this purpose. I usually quit doing this during the summer.

The others, I vary depending upon what I see is working on this board. When others share, I usually mimic their setup. I now have about 8 go to lures I've picked up from reading.

Here is a typical setup for me during the summer mornings: 2 top water(large and small), a middle of the water column lure, and a jig.

Around 9-10 am my setup looks like this: two middle of the water column lures(mirrodine, bomber, etc.) and 2 bottom(jig and spoon).

Another reason I take 4, is I fish with crap poles. You never know when one is going quit.

Sounds like I am on track. I generally carry 3 on the river when I am trying to be conservative. One Calcutta and 2 Stradics spinning reels. Even when I carry several, I use these 3. Thanks for the advice guys.

In the kayak I carry 2.

In the canoe I usually carry 2-4.

I have found that for every extra rod I carry I double the chances of breaking one.
(It's not really that bad, but the chances of one getting broken do go up.)
