Cold Water clothing

Post by Redbelly »

I am looking at the lightweight waders in Cabellas. The ones with the waist belt, and stocking feet. I may get a pair to wear for winter yak fishing. Of course wearing layers underneath, and some sandals or a wader type shoe.
I also am looking at Frogg Toggs.

What do you wear when its chilly?

Here's my layers:
Underarmor type shirt and bottoms.
Neoprene boots -they let water in but not out and are quite toasty
Shorts & shirt
Frog togs

Absolutely no cotton. Been fishing in the 20's with no problem and I have to start stripping around 40 degrees.
A better Kayaker today, than yesterday.

Hey Redbelly,
I don't have near the huevos most of the others have here. I wear the lightweight, breatheable stockingfoot waders. Under that I have synthetic thermals and over them a goretex jacket. Even though the waders are belted I always, always have my PFD on and zipped before launching.

MTI adventurewear dry top and pants over layers ,3-5 mm neoprene booties on the feet, & MTI PFD !

sounds like those waders should work fine for you, keep warm , safe , and have fun !

Use polypropylene type products. They wick water faster than cotton. Cotton will get you killed. I get upset when I see folks fish in jeans. I can't imagine the burden upon someone trying to swim with jeans on. Layers is your best bet. I layer up and keep in mind that even when the air is 35 deg F the water is warmer and you will be warmer on the water in a kayak than you would be on a boat sine you are closer to the water.

This time of year I've gone to waders in the kayak, layering up underneath as necessary. I don't have a problem staying dry in the canoe, but in the kayak I have given up trying to stay dry from the waist down.

Sam's has a display of Guide's Choice outerwear until the 19th of this month. I picked up a waterproof, breathable, fleece-type jacket for $35. They had several different parkas and waterproof pants as well.
