Rod floats or leash? Which is better?

Post by jeeper50 »

Just trying to gather up some info to keep me from donating fishing rods to Neptune. Should I just use the BPS floats or skip them and use a leash attached to the yak in the even of a spill? What do you use?

BK - I generally go with the leash for my lures  I call it leader.

I can't stand to have all those leashes tangled all over the place. Rod leash, paddle leash, anchor leash. Just to damn many things to go wrong. If I lose something, BAD on me

I lost one rod a while ago. Now I use floats on all them. I don't even notice them.

gotcha...thanks, tim

the float seems to be ok but a leash on the rod does sound cumbersome

I was thinking that the leash would only be attached to the stowed rods, not while casting.

Once donated one of my setups to the salty drink for about 7 minutes in about 4 foot of water off of SGI. Got it off the bottom, poured a bottle of water all over it thoroughly, and continued fishing the rest of the day with it...landed my biggest red to date a couple of hours after that. Still fish with that reel to this date without any problems.

Still haven't gotten a float or a leash. I might give the float a try one of these days.

I agree with bk. Except for I have used the floats like cotton and disliked them completly. Yes a few close calls here and their but my cat like reflexes plucked them from the water  I wouldn't use either but if you are so inclined and it works for you. Go for it!

Looking forward to the tourney. The Forgotten Coast reminds me so much of the west side of Pensacola back 40 years ago.

I have lost two rod/reels off my kayak so now I am using floats on all my rods, inshore and off. I tried the leashes and hated them! I cut sections of pool noodles (the ones with a hollow center) and then slice lengthwise to wrap around the rods. If the hole is too big I cut out a lengthwise section. I first tried velcro strips to wrap the float but the line kept hanging up on the strips. I now use gorilla tape. Since using the floats I've dropped rod/reels in the water twice.
One of the two I didn't notice the rod/reel was off the kayak til I'd floated off a ways. The flourescent green pool noodle float made it easier to find. Have to clean the reel but that's better than the replacement costs.

I have no experience with either. I have found, over the years, that I am more likely to break a rod than lose it. But I would think that the floats would be a lot less hassle than the leashes.

Us older guys probably have more Garfield like cat reflexes. I'm going with floats just not sure how an 8' rod and reel will float with one- probably just enough foe someone else to find it after I lose it in the swells.
