Got a Kayak for Xmas!! - have questions

Post by Jorge »

First of all, I'd like to wish everyone here a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Found a new Kayak floating in the pool on Christmas morning; now I have to get it to the boat ramp on my little 325i BMW. Any suggestions for a good car carrier? Only have to travel about 25miles to the ramp and the top speed is about 55 along the way but I don't want the Yak flying off the top of my car. Which carrier would you boys and girls recommend? Could also use tips on PED's and paddles. Thanks and see you on the flats!!

Check out the Yakima or Thule websites. Both will guide thru the process and give you your options.
As for paddles, there are many options ranging from $15 to $350. I prefer a firmer blades. Check out the yellow Carlisle paddle at Kevin's. A great paddle for a $100.

Also be sure to verify the weight of your kayak versus the rack capacity and any kayak holders / adapters that you choose. Some kayak holder are designed for lighter sit inside kayaks.

I carry my kayak (65 lbs) around on my Mini Cooper without issue, so your car should do fine.

A trailer makes a lot of sense if you have place to store it. Compare the price of a small utility trailer versus a complete commercial rack for a car and that will give you an idea of the upgrade price.
