Look for the Ands

Post by Charles »

When fishing an area that has a lot of one kind of structure; say, a creek with a lot of rocks, look for the ands.

Rocky and a drop-off.

Rocky and an oyster bar.

Rocky and a point.

The more ands you have together, the better.

Rocky and a point, and a drop-off.

Rocky and an oyster bar, and a shallower sandy stretch, and a drop-off, and a bend in the creek, and rock weed, and the presence of mullet.

If an area has a lot of a certain kind of structure the fish won't hold to that particular structure because there is so much of it. They will be holding to that and something else. Something that is less prevalent.

In a sandy/muddy area without a lot of rocks the rocky spot could be the and.

This goes along with what I have noticed before about fishing edges. The more combinations of edges concentrated close together, the better.

I recently read that some fish a lifetime without catching a particular fish, i.e. a redfish, it occurred to me that spending some time on this forum and reading posts such as yours should give most people at least the fundamentals to search, find, and catch these wily fishes. Thanks man, you should write more often!

I can believe that. I fished all Saturday afternoon and could have used about 8 fewer redfish and two more trout.
